About NORMA

NORMA 2027 is the Nordic Mathematics Education Conference. The NORMA conferences are organized in collaboration with NoRME— the Nordic Society for Research in Mathematics Education, https://sites.google.com/view/norme/home, NoRME is open for membership from national societies for research in mathematics education in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

The NORMA conferences offer forum for discussions and constructive interactions among researchers, teachers, teacher educators, graduate students and others interested in mathematics education research in the Nordic and Baltic context. NORMA are small-scale conferences that emphasize interaction between participants and interplay between scientific and social activities. NORMA 27 will have a limit of 380 participants. The conference language is English and all presentations will be in English. The scientific program and the review process are organized and managed by the international program committee (IPC) for NORMA 27.

Tentative agenda of the multi-track conference:

  • Tuesday noon, June 8 - Friday noon, June 11: the main conference
  • Friday afternoon, June 11: school visits, social programme, a session for/with Estonian teachers' (optional)

Key theme

The NORMA 2027 key theme, “(No) Tradeoffs Between Human and Machine Intelligence in Mathematics Education,” invites the mathematics education community to examine how emerging AI technologies reshape learning, teaching, assessment, curriculum and research in mathematics education. Rather than treating human and machine intelligence as opposites, the theme asks when AI can extend human mathematical thinking, creativity, agency and professional judgement — and when it may narrow, replace or obscure them.

We welcome contributions that explore the opportunities, tensions and ethical questions arising from AI-supported mathematics education: from students’ reasoning, problem solving and proof work to teachers’ planning, feedback and assessment practices. The theme also invites critical perspectives on equity, transparency, datafication, teacher professionalism and the Nordic-Baltic tradition of trust-based education.

NORMA 2027 aims to create a space for research-informed dialogue on how mathematics education can respond to technological change while keeping human understanding, participation and responsibility at the centre.
