Keynotes
Matti Tedre: “Shifting from Rule-Based to Data-Driven Computing Changes What Learners Need to Understand and How We Teach It”
Abstract: What changes when learners get to design and implement machine learning systems whose behavior emerges from data and training rather than explicitly programmed rules? Drawing on a multi-year large-scale AI education research study, this talk explores the different mindsets, tools, and first principles this shift demands, and considers its implications for knowledge, reasoning, and learner agency in schools and teacher education.
Short bio: Matti Tedre is a professor in the School of Computing at the University of Eastern Finland. His research focuses on computing education and AI education, including how learners come to understand data-driven systems. He leads the Generation AI project, which develops educational tools and approaches for exploring AI, machine learning, and datafication in K-12 schools. He has held academic positions in Sweden, Tanzania, South Korea, South Africa, Austria, and Finland, and contributes to many international AI education initiatives in advisory roles.
